The access to the labour market is one of the key pillars of smooth integration and
decent living for the citizens of a country. In recent years, and particularly after the
economic crisis, the labour market appears to be a difficult area and a particular
concern for jobseekers – and especially young people.
For refugees and migrants, these difficulties seem to be even greater, as they are
compounded by language and social integration issues.
What are the difficulties faced by a young refugee or immigrant seeking work in
ARSIS has been working for years to support vulnerable social groups and
implement projects that enhance their skills.
By mapping their needs in order to provide more effective support it appears that
for a person with refugee/migrant background is very important:
The educational support: seminars, language learning (Greek/English),
strengthening of skills, recognition of degrees from their countries of origin.
The job seeking support: the knowledge of the labour rights, finding a job with a
good salary, good working conditions, finding a job based on their existing
The legal support regarding legal documents
The psychosocial support to overcome barriers accessing public services, health
system or educational system and to report problems/difficulties.
In conclusion, it seems that for a better social and work integration it is necessary to
have secured housing and a continuous educational process to enhance their skills.
It is also necessary to cover basic livelihood needs, which despite living in Greece
for years, some of them have not been covered. Through this will be able to focus
on subsequent educational activities that will empower them in the labour market.
Additionally the user-friendly educational tools would help them to gain a better
understanding of the country they live in, knowledge of opportunities, networking
and create employability opportunities.
